El año pasado, Paul y yo comenzamos a expandir nuestro negocio de enseñanza de inglés para enfocarnos más en nuestros cursos de inmersión en inglés. Comenzando con experiencias de Mini Inmersión de 5 horas, hemos ido construyendo gradualmente cursos de inmersión de una semana de duración en los que nuestros estudiantes viven con nosotros durante 6 días y comparten nuestra vida cotidiana. Hemos recibido excelentes reseñas y disfrutamos mucho ver cuánto más seguros se sienten nuestros estudiantes después de pasar tiempo con nosotros, hablando inglés desde la hora del desayuno hasta la hora de acostarse.
Por el momento, nuestro curso de inmersión en inglés más popular es el intensivo de fin de semana. Mucha gente que vive en Madrid y sus afueras están ocupadas con el trabajo durante la semana, por lo que el fin de semana es la oportunidad perfecta para escaparse a la sierra y disfrutar del campo y practicar su inglés al mismo tiempo. Tenemos la suerte de vivir en una zona realmente bonita, a unos 40 minutos de Madrid, a los pies del Parque Nacional de la Pedriza, por lo que es ideal para pasear en la naturaleza o visitar y tomar algo en los pueblos cercanos.
A menudo, nuestros estudiantes tienen objetivos profesionales específicos, como ayuda con la preparación de exámenes o entrevistas, la práctica de habilidades de reunión, negociación y presentación o el inglés para viajes de negocios o de placer. Como profesores, tenemos mucha experiencia en ayudar a los alumnos a prepararse para los exámenes B2 o C1, que a menudo son necesarios para acceder a la universidad o a los negocios.
Sean cuales sean sus objetivos, intentamos que nuestros cursos de inmersión sean lo más divertidos, eficaces y memorables posible para nuestros alumnos. Aunque vivimos en España, somos una familia británica y la experiencia que nuestros huéspedes tienen aquí es lo más parecida posible a visitar el Reino Unido, ¡sin el vuelo! Dedicamos mucho tiempo a conocer a nuestros estudiantes y darles la oportunidad de usar y activar el inglés que han estudiado anteriormente.
En 2023 tuvimos grandes experiencias. Acogimos a varios adolescentes de la zona de Madrid, normalmente en grupos de dos, pero a veces de forma individual. Dependiendo de las edades y las necesidades de nuestros alumnos, solemos combinar actividades más informales como excursiones a la zona, juegos, cocina y manualidades con sesiones de “clase” para practicar habilidades específicas como escuchar, hablar y escribir. Para que el formato sea más divertido, intentamos utilizar estudios de casos y juegos de rol para motivar e involucrar a nuestros estudiantes.
También pasamos algunos fines de semana muy agradables con adultos individuales, mayormente profesionales que necesitaban inglés en su vida laboral diaria. Adaptamos cada fin de semana a las necesidades de los estudiantes y nos enfocamos en sus áreas de negocio específicas. En 2023, esto incluyó seguros, banca, gestión de proyectos, energías renovables, TI, contratación y ONG. Esto es algo que nos encanta, porque aprendemos mucho de cada estudiante; Cada experiencia de inmersión es diferente.
Una parte muy divertida de nuestro trabajo es recibir a pequeños grupos de adultos o adolescentes mayores. Hemos realizado inmersiones de inglés de fin de semana con hasta 4 estudiantes al mismo tiempo. Esto ha incluido grupos familiares y grupos de amigos, pero también grupos que nunca se han conocido antes, ¡pero que se han convertido en amigos durante el curso de inmersión! El objetivo general es mejorar la fluidez y proporcionar oportunidades variadas para que los estudiantes hablen inglés en situaciones formales e informales en un ambiente positivo y de apoyo. Al mismo tiempo, intentamos incluir sesiones para trabajar áreas particulares de interés, dependiendo del grupo, como presentaciones, llamadas telefónicas y correos electrónicos.
Nuestros planes para 2024
De cara al próximo año, esperamos aumentar nuestra visibilidad en Madrid, ya que muchas personas y empresas no saben que existe la oportunidad que ofrecemos. Somos conscientes de que muchas grandes empresas y academias ofrecen experiencias de inmersión en inglés a mayor escala, pero creemos que la experiencia que ofrecemos es más auténtica, personal y asequible.
En las vacaciones de Semana Santa y verano de este año, esperamos ofrecer programas de inmersión más largos en nuestra casa de El Boalo, sierra de Guadarrama. Estamos muy entusiasmados con este proyecto porque realmente creemos que una semana (mínimo 72 horas) hablando inglés en un ambiente cómodo y de apoyo, con dos profesores experimentados es mejor que dos semanas en el Reino Unido quedándose con muchos otros estudiantes españoles o un año yendo a clases una vez a la semana. A medida que tienes que pensar y comunicarte en inglés de la mañana a la noche, tu confianza crece, comienzas a pensar más rápido y los errores que has estado cometiendo durante años pueden ser identificados, corregidos y rectificados.

2023 – a year of English language immersions
Last year Paul and I started to expand our English teaching business to focus more on our English immersion courses. Starting with 5 hour Mini Immersion experiences, we have gradually built up to week long immersion courses where our students live with us for 6 days and share our daily life. We have received great feedback and we really enjoy seeing how much more confident our students feel after spending time with us, speaking English from breakfast time to bedtime.
At the moment our most popular English immersion course is the Weekend Residential Immersion. Many people living in the Madrid area are busy with work during the week, so the weekend is the perfect chance to escape to the mountains and enjoy the countryside and practice their English at the same time. We are lucky to live in a really beautiful area, about 40 minutes from Madrid, at the foot of the Pedriza National Park, so it’s ideal for walks and visits to the mountains, lakes or just to look around the local villages and have a drink.
Often our students have specific professional objectives, such as help with exam or interview preparation, practicing meetings, negotiation and presentation skills or English for business or leisure trips. As teachers we are very experienced in helping learners prepare for the B2 or C1 exams, which are often required for access to university or business.
Whatever their goals, we try to make our immersion courses as enjoyable, effective and memorable for our students as possible. Although we live in Spain, we are very much a British family and the experience our guests have here is as close to visiting the UK as possible, without the flight! We spend a lot of time getting to know our students and giving them the chance to use and activate the English they have previously studied.
In 2023 we had some great experiences. We welcomed a number of teenagers from the Madrid area, usually in groups of two but sometimes individuals. Depending on the ages and the needs of our students, we usually combine more informal activities such as excursions to the local area, games, cooking and crafts with ‘class’ based sessions to practice specific skills such as listening, speaking and writing. To make the format more fun, we try to use case studies and roleplays to motivate and engage our students.
We also had some really enjoyable weekends with individual adults, usually professionals who needed English in their daily working life. We tailored each weekend to the needs of the students and focused on their specific business areas. In 2023 this included insurance, banking, project management, renewable energy, IT, recruitment and NGOs. This is something we love, because we learn so much from each student; each immersion experience is different.
A really fun part of our work is hosting small groups of adults or older teenagers. We have run weekend English immersions with up to 4 students at the same time. This has included family groups and groups of friends, but also groups who have never met before, but who have become friends during the immersion course! The overall objective of improving fluency and providing varied opportunities for students to speak English in formal and informal situations in a supportive and positive atmosphere. At the same time, we try to include sessions to work on particular areas of interest, depending on the group, such as presentations, telephone calls and emails.
Our plans for 2024
Looking to the year ahead, we hope to increase our profile in Madrid, as many people and businesses do not know the opportunity we offer exists. We are aware that many large companies and academies offer English immersion experiences on a larger scale, but we believe the experience we provide is more authentic, personal and affordable.
In the Easter and summer holidays this year, we hope to to offer longer immersion programs at our home in El Boalo, sierra de Guadarrama. We are really excited about this project because we really believe that a week (minimum 72 hours) speaking English in a comfortable and supportive environment, with two experienced teachers is better than two weeks in the UK staying with lots of other Spanish students or a year going to classes once a week. As you have to think and communicate in English from morning to night, your confidence grows, you start to think more quickly and mistakes that you have been making for years can be identified, corrected and rectified.
